Someone should ask Regina Taylor what what she thinks. In her marvelous play "Crowns" she has set this song, the finale of the play, as a very triumphant anthem as the women ascends the stairs to heaven to get their glory crowns. And honey, let me tell you, it rocks the house!
Then apparently your Black professor either doesn't understand the song or failed to communicate it to you adeqyately.
It is NOT a happy song to be performed the way you do. It's a very sad song to be done in a mournful manner. Your choir's rendition of this song is terrible.
@badbajan actually, our professor is black, and he does actually tell us the history behind this song and all the other gospel songs we sing. he is a very good gospel choir director, and this is his way of spreading love. don't you think it's a little disrespectful that white people shouldn't be able to sing it? i believe that is the best way to understand each other and to respect other cultures.
Do these people know that the song is about a Slave dreaming about escaping slavery in the United States?
The enslaved African is dreaming about having shoes when he gets to Canada, or "heaven." He's dreaming about having shoes because he has to work in the fields with no shoes on his feet.
This is the saddest song I know, and it should not be sung in such a carefree manner by happy white people ~ this is really disrespectful.
It says "all God's children". That is all believers, black or white!
