She is a wonderful actress, and her performance in Testament was astounding. It is unfortunate I can never bear to watch that film ever again since it sent me into a depression that took weeks to wear off. There is perhaps no film ever made that is more despairing.
I think she would have been a great Bergman actress - with a face so expressive it speaks volumes.

@xavierbrad I agree. Testament remains the most grim, depressing film I have seen in my life. It is relentlessly overwhelmingly draining to watch, Jane Alexander's performance is nothing short of astounding and utterly gut wrenching. It is amazing the power this movie has had on many viewers I have chatted with. They all concur.

Her performance in Testament was so riveting and heartfelt...the scene shown here gives me chills every single time...just brilliant
-
Yeah, and deservedly so. Her only good nomination was for Testament.
-
she lost out to Glenda Jackson, Beatrice Straight, Meryl Streep, and Shirley MacClaine.

Your right, for some reason I always mix 1983 and 1984 up. Jessica Lange would have won in 1983 if Sophies Choice had not been made the same year as Frances. As for MacLaine, its a good performance but I think Alexander should have won hands down. It was the most emotionally raw performance I have seen to this day.

what ever happened to this gret actress?

I've loved this childhood idol of mine and greatly miss her presence on the stage/screen. It was great to see glimpses of her durng the recent Kennedy Honors special.

Yeah i agree she should have won some. But i might be biast, she is my aunt lol!
You're absolutely right, but the fact is that she lost that Oscar not because of Sophie's Choice buf of Shirley MacLaine's Terms of Endearment
