Alcator C-mod is an experimental tokamak at MIT. A gas plasma is made to fuse in the magnetic field created by the tokamak's magnetic tores. It's only visible on the edge of the confined space, because is so hot elsewhere that it does not emit light in the visible spectrum.

Vue de l'interieur du reacteur experimental Alcator C-mod lors d'une decharge,
par l'une des cameras situees dans la paroi exterieure de l'enceinte. Le
cylindre central est le transformateur, qui, par induction, cree un courant
toroidal dans le plasma (pour le champ magnetique poloidial et le chauffage
ohmique du plasma). Le plasma, constitue essentiellement de noyaux de
deuterium, de noyaux d'hydrogene et d'electrons, n'est visible qu'a proximite
des elements de l'enceinte (zones de lumiere blanche sur la video), car partout
ailleurs il est si chaud qu'il n'emet pas de rayonnement dans le champ du
visible.
