More than 2,000 Afghan politicians, tribal elders and community leaders are in Kabul this week for a four-day Loya Jirga. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss relations with the United States and reconciliation efforts with the Taliban. Afghan President Hamid Karzai opened the four-day meeting with a speech saying that an agreement with the United States is in Afghanistan's best interests and that a deal must respect Afghanistan's sovereignty. Foreign policy analysts say peace in Afghanistan depends more on development, especially in the country's agriculture sector, than just on security forces.
