don't think i'll ever miss them..... cause i don't think they'll ever really leave me.

@WhitetailWillie merle had to fight and struggle against the powers that be to make the kind of music he wanted. strait and his generation were given the blessing of the industry for doing what they/the powers that be wanted.

@WhitetailWillie i was 19 when george strait hit. i never understood what the big deal was. he, john anderson and ricky skaggs among others were called traditionalists. we still had merle, george, waylon. now i understand that the new traditionalists movement was basically the country music industry creating a phenomenon in reaction to all of the negative press + backlash over the urban cowboy fad.
-
@johnrunion i understand the feats that merle overcame in country music. i guess in the generation that i've grown up to listening, i still consider george strait as traditional country.

@WhitetailWillie merle is an artist. he makes a stand. he stands his ground. he doesn't cave in to the record executives/companies. he pays no mind to any trends that come along. he does things his way. he does what he wants to do. he doesn't take commercial considerations into mind. merle lived his songs. he wrote much/most of his material. strait just does what he is told to do.
-
@johnrunion oh wow really? well that's not cool..
-
@johnrunion merle haggard is also a great guitar player. strait is too pre-fab.
-
@WhitetailWillie no way! george strait doesn't write hardly any of his material. he is no where near being the HAG. the hag is a true artist. he is the best singer in the history of country music. jones is number 2. merle is a singer and a songwriter. he lived his songs.

These boys sang what they lived . . . they didn't have a hundred monkeys on a hundred typewriters writing songs until a hit came along. These guys are the real deal.
