Line Breaker Monster Trout Attack Bait go arobatic. Great 2 day trip with a overnight camping at Lake Amador near Jackson California. We were fishing for large Donaldson trout using new Berkley Gulp bait in a chartreuse glitter with Shelton Self Releasing hooks and Shelton's Tadpole™ snagless weights. We were fishing from a 15 foot aluminum boat. The Gulp looks similar to Powerbait. It is a little softer than Powerbait and you can put on more and still have the hook easily come out of the bait and stick the fish. We pulled the boat up on shore but fished out the back of the boat. Since you aren't breaking off hooks in fish and with the TadPole snagless weights, not breaking off in rocks, you get in more fishing time because you are not down re-rigging so that gives you more time with your bait in the water and you improve your catch. This is especially important when you have kids, as you will not spend all of your time re-rigging them. It is especially a good feeling seeing them swim away. Berkley Power Bait and these hooks and TadPole make one of the most effective trout bait rig there is. Catch and keep, no problem, you get the hook out instantly, and catch and release couldn't be easier. Regarding self-releasing hooks. They are design to release fish without touching them. Basically how they work is the eye of the hook is at the bend of the hook and the leader line goes through a flexible plastic sleeve that goes over leader line and when the sleeve is slid down over the shank of the hook it is set and fish just like a regular fishhook. The sleeve has a second line tied to the top of this and parallels the main leader line and is attach by a sliding 3 turn uniknot tied with thread. When you slid the red knot up by pinching it or using a pocket comb it slides the sleeve up and the hook rotates and self releases.

  • what setup r using or rig

  • We are using Shelton Self Releasing trout hook rigs with #10 hooks with 18 inch leader with a sliding Shelton TadPole™ snagless weigh in a 5/16 size. The bait is Berkley charteuse sparkle power bait fishing near shore out of the boat. These rigs are available from Shelton Products by internet..see my web site info listed in more info above.

    Good fishing Bill

  • Apologizes about he comment earlier. I didn't notice that you were using the self release hook!

  • Good job on catch and release but the method of leaving 6 to 8 inches of line still attach doesn't seem like the fish will have a chance to survive. I've seen many trout floating dead or washed to shore with line still attach and I just wonder if the fishing line will get digested in the fish's stomach.
