Ian Riley's Black Five twins, 44871 and 45407 climb from Birkett Tunnel to Ais Gill summit, on the Settle-Carlisle line, seen from the east side of Mallerstang Common. Before the train appears, the sound-track includes a hunting horn (there was a drag hunt across the fells that afternoon), the sound of fence posts being knocked in, and the exhaust from 44871 & 45407 as they crossed Birkett Common, more than five miles away.

  • You must have be very glad you made the late decision to journey north Mark. Superb shot in such stunning conditions

  • Thanks for the kind comments, everyone. Yes - it was worth the drive from Oxford! On a normal January day, I bet it would be chilly up there. However, as you can see from the way the exhaust lingers in the air, it was really still last Saturday so, having warmed myself up climbing up there, and remembered to take an extra layer with me, it wasn't too bad.
