Belonging to the Shingon Sect, Buzan School, Hosenji temple in Nakano-ku, Tokyo holds an unusual setsubun bean-throwing ceremony on Feb. 3. It includes a procession of warrior monks and throwing mikan tangerines besides beans. Photos: http://photoguide.jp/pix/thumbnails.php?album=505

  • cool, so the ancient warrior monks, were they samurai?

  • Technically, they were Buddhist monks, not samurai which is a different social class. But warrior monks could be as ferocious as samurai, and often a major threat to the ruling samurai who usually retaliated by burning down temples.

  • if they were not samurai, how come they are shown here wearing katanas? werent the samurai only allowed to wear them? also what was the martial art that these monks learned?

  • It was a time before that rule was in place. A time when anybody took up a sword and fought.

  • haha I love naginata monks on shogun 2 total war pc game, but i did not expect them to be this old lolz

  • awesome! they're called sohei in japanese though they learned art of sword they learned aikido. thats what their martial art was

  • i'm planning to live in japan 3 years after, where can i find sohei?

  • @XIPM3 that is a slight over simplification- this notion that only Samurai carried Katana is only really accurate from the Sword Hunt of Toyotomi Hideyoshi onwards

  • @XIPM3 late response, but those were their secondary weapons, using the Nagatina as their primary, again katanas were easy to build at that time

  • @XIPM3 The Warrior Monks power was during the time of warfare during the 1200 till 1613 when the Edo Shogunate was established. The samurai class was pretty much established by then, but before that anyone who could get a sword and gather people could advance in power because of the constant warfare between clans.

  • Nice to see it i went there two weeks ago and keep up the clip i shot
