Noroît (une vengeance) by Jacques Rivette, 1976
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074974/
The second film from Rivette's unfinished four-part series "Les Filles du Feu" ("Duelle" being the only other film completed for the project). The film stars a nearly-all-female cast in a loose pirate adaptation of a Jacobean tragedy which has only two female characters, namely Middleton's/Tourneur's "The Revenger's Tragedy." In this scene Morag (Geraldine Chaplin) and Erika (Kika Markham) stage the pivotal murder scene from the play for Giula (Bernadette Lafont) and the other pirates. The exaggerated play-violence quickly blurs into possible, then fulfilled, film-violence. The scene directly follows a scene that was itself inspired by the same murder scene the characters are playing (which explains Chaplin's wig, as the character she killed had blonde hair), inverting the usual play-within-the-play relationship in Jacobean tragedies which typically used the device to anticipate a murder. At the end of the scene Giula says "Morag, make her disappear."
Excellent film that has yet to be released on Region 1 DVD.
Without doubt one of the strangest and most brilliant films I've ever seen.
