by Megan Sura through Rev. Dr. James Kenneth Powell II, opensourcebuddhism.org. This extensive work makes the case for decreasing religious illiteracy in the United States. The disastrous consequences of ignorance of others leads to endless war until we all admit of the powerful presence of religion in all our lives, whether we like it or not. Sura works primarily from Prothero to make her case to teach religions of Earth in schools. She cites the English experiment in such multi-culturalism and the challenges to maintain such instruction in British schools in the face of increasing backlash. This project offers some interesting video and extensive graphs and visuals to make her case. There is perhaps an over-emphasis on Christianity, but nevertheless the complaint Christians have is the same complaint for Hindus, Buddhists, Daoists and the rest: please understand us! Sura points out the difference between preaching and teaching Earths religions. Nice job!

  • Yes,

I told her I thought it was too slanted towards Christianity and she acknowledged that was fair. I do my best to instruct students in the way you suggest - fairness - but, all has to be subjective to some degree, no?

  • evolution is NOT a religion.

it is a conclusive, unified scientific theory.

  • I half agree with you. It is empirically demonstrable and I accept its truth, even I relish it. My student has a point too however. Evolution is a product of human consciousness, meaning, it wasn't effectively true until proven. It still isn't true for perhaps the majority of humans. As I tell students, belief is a fact too. If 4+ billion believe in unprovables, that belief itself is a reality.

You can't find and atom of justice or love, but they are real, no?

    James

  • Yes I agree.

I realize the way I worded my previous comment made it seem like I was implying something about your teaching skills, but I was not trying to. I was just curious as to who the lady was. Overall the essay was quite good. Personally, I am not that good at right them because I always get writers block.

  • Is this person one of your students, Mr. Powell? I didn't really agree with a lot of what she said because most of it was centered on the Bible. I would only agree to a world religion course in high schools if it were to treat every religion equally and without validation of one over the others. I disagree with her assessment of morality as well.
