Repairing the Speedometer on my 1996 Tacoma. The speedometer on my truck was reading faster than the truck was going, so I decided to take it apart to see if I could fix it.

This is my first video of a car repair, so it is a little long since I don't have video editing software yet. I subscribe to some other tuber's who make car repair videos, and I have learned a lot from them, so I decided to start making some of my own. Hopefully someone will benefit from this info.

  • Very informative video...you were experiencing a different problem then I am, my speedometer stops working every winter, last year i replaced the entire speedometer cable it worked all summer long then when winter came it would work sometimes when the truck warmed up and then it quit all together eventually, do you have any suggestions on to prevent this from happening again? my truck is the same year as yours and same setup. also do you think it could be the speed sensor on the tranny?

  • @MotoXYZ450f I can't really suggest a way to prevent it without being able to figure out the problem. does your odometer still work, if so the cable and drive unit in the tranny are ok. If the odometer is not working then there is a problem with the cable, or the drive unit in the tranny or one of the cable connections. there is the very unlikely possibility that the speedometer and the odometer both broke and the cable is fine, but I doubt that.

  • @MotoXYZ450f The Speed sensor is actually part of the gauge cluster, its the white plastic part the cable connects to. The speed sensor sends a signal to the ECU to tell the computer how fast the truck is moving. I would also suggest buying, or borrowing from a friend, a scan tool that can show live data. This will let you know if the computer is getting a speed signal or not and can really help pinpoint where in the system the problem is.

  • I have the same truck but the only problems im having is my fuel gauge! lol that thing goes up and down, up and down while im driving lol.

  • buy a new truck. lol.

  • @talleddie81 nothing is working on my gauge, expect the tach, odometer trip odometer and cruise control is not working and ofcourse the mph, I replaced the VSS today on the tranny still nothing, I take it from what your saying there is a electric speed sensor behind the gauge cluster? the only thing i can come up with is that i have a bad speedometer or there is actually something wrong with my tranny and it will not turn the gear to rotate the speedo cable.
