Wood staining preparation tips from Minwax and Bruce Johnson. The most important step in wood preparation is to apply Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner before staining wood. Learn how to fill gaps and wood imperfections before staining. It is important to prepare wood properly before staining, including sanding wood. Always sand wood in the same direction as the grain of the wood. Start with 120 sand paper, and then move up to 220 sand paper to eliminate fine scratches and fuzz. The problem with wood is you cannot predict how the wood pores will absorb wood stain. To prevent stain from getting blotched or being absorbed unevenly, apply Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. It is always a good idea to use a water-based wood conditioner with water-based stain. Use a brush and apply the wood conditioner liberally. Let the wood conditioner soak in, then wipe off excess.
