Technically, you are able to view yourself if you place portals properly. Often though it is only a cursory side view; for instance, in this video, you can see yourself walking out of the "cell" as you exit it, because the portal faces you toward yourself.

dang, GLaDOS made a major glitch at 0:53 . dang that had to hurt
