This video is intended primarily for people in the Newark New Jersey (NJ) corps of Teach for America.
A 2004 corps member walks through the Forest Hills section of Newark (in the North Ward).
The goal of the video is to indicate that there are desirable places in Newark for corps members to live, by giving some snapshots of one neighborhood.
At the end of the video, three main reasons are listed why corps members should consider living in Newark: to be in a better position to advocate with public officials; to keep Newarker's tax dollars in Newark; and to understand the community in which they will teach.
This idea (and the video) is not sponsored or endorsed by Teach For America. Perhaps it ought to be.
I am a Houston teacher who wants to communicate with TFA teachers. I respect your work, but believe TFA leaders are too close to conservatives. They blame schools and teachers, not our unequal society, for every education failing. This goes back to TFA's founding, when Wendy Kopp built an alliance with Union Carbide, whose negligence caused 100,000 casualties in India, and continued with her hookup with the Edison Project, which wanted to replace public schools with corporate schools.
