Online freelance work definitely works. I started working with just a laptop and 3 years later, got clients from US, Italy, Israel, China and Australia, and had a chance to visit the States, Europe, and hire manufacturing suppliers from China and Brazil. A freelancer can be extremely competitive in terms of cost and response time, and the 99% of the challenges come from oneself (time management, distractions, lack of focus, etc.) Good luck.
