X Factor Hallelujah 2008 Song Why Hallelujah? Out of all the songs in the world, why this one?

The lyrics mean nothing to us in the 21st Century.
These are the lyrics to the song.

"Hallelujah"

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah

  • Spiritroar, are you saying that the lyrics don't make sense to you, and/or you're asking if they make sense to us? Just trying to understand your purpose with this vid. For anyone who doesn't understand the lyrics, it's called poetry. Leonard Cohen is a poet who sings. It doesn't surprise me that people don't understand the lyrics. Millions of Americans can scarcely read or spell, let alone deconstruct Leonard Cohen.

I would appreciate it if you could send me a message and explain what all the verses mean. As you can see in other comments, people have come up with different explainations

  • It's just a bout a mnas troubles, demon plagued state of mind, anyone can take it and apply it to their own life, that's what makes a great song.

You say I took the name in vain

I don't even know the name

But if I did, well really, what's it to you?

There's a blaze of light in every word

It doesn't matter which you heard

The holy or the broken Hallelujah

This verse alone could be about a simple argument..or a demise of a king. The only verse that is not that applicable is the first.

  • chineseroses

in other words.. you don't know what the words really mean.

  • What I believe that chineseroses meant is that each song conveys a different meaning to each person who listens to it; it is how you choose to interpret the song and how you choose to apply it to your own life.

Like a piece of poetry, a song like this conveys several different meanings. Like a song in church, it doesn't have one meaning, it is how it helps each individual person in their spiritual growth.

  • I understand what you are saying but, I want to know what the writer meant. I don't want to adapt it to my life, I want to know why he wrote what he did.

Everywhere everyone would associate the dove to the holy spirit or to peace. But the illuminati associates it to Lucifer. Watch Beyonce's 'sweetdreams'.

  • @NiamhLovesTony your confused, the holy dove refers to the Holy Spirit, the dove is sometimes used as a symbol for the Holy Spirit, "holy dove"... . The Holy Spirit is a HE! A relationship with the Holy Spirit is a relationship of love, for he is love. This song is about someone turning against the Holy Spirit, against God himself. It is about two lovers though. Jesus is the lover of your soul.

  • this song is about two lovers, who cannot be together.

the reason that verse was left out is because of this line "and remember when i moved in you, and the holy dove was moving too?" which is reference to the act of sexual intercourse, obviously, how else would he "move" in her? and obviously alexandra burke didnt sing that cause she cant exactly "move" in anyone can she?

seeing as she is a woman.

and it is completely revelant to todays times, people spilt up nowadays, don't they?

  • You say ancient time...1988 isn't THAT long ago.

  • Leonard Cohen is still alive. have yo already mailed him?

Because: I can tell you what educated persons of the 21th century with basic knowledge of the Bible and some experience of life might understand when reading these lyrics. but if you want to know for sure what exactly the author meant you must ask the author himself.

  • Wow.

I think you're totally idiotic and shallow minded.

This has EVERYTHING to do with ANY generation.

People are always the same, regardless which generation.

All of it makes sense to me.

  • Your faith was strong but you needed proof

You saw her bathing on the roof

to me that is a clear refrens to samson in the bibel, to a firend that is sadomasochstic sex.

if you wana know waht the aurthor ment why ask us?.

i think its all biblical refrences. but its alot more fun to interpet it as sex in disguise

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

    i love alexandra too-shes amazing

& why shud it bither you what song she sings? she was a number 1 for weeks.

  • what ya onabout they thought diana was gonna win?

she had no chance-she was up against alex

  • One phrase that Spiritroar highlights above, one that the X-Factor folks cut out, was a reference to lovemaking.

  • they picked it because they thought diana was going to win, [she sung this song at bootcamp]

  • chineseroses

what does the song mean? How can you appreciate a song if you don't know what it is about?

  • This song is about the Lord God i think and his love for us, i dont know i could be wrong

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written. So much complex symblism I really feel sorry for anyone who can't appreciate this song.

  • I love the song, and i love the idea that the words mean "nothing to us"! Who's "us"??

Don't count me in, i love the song, the words are beautiful, and as the writer of the song (Leonard Cohen) was forced to tour again due to being ripped off by his management for millions of dollars i hope it's the Christmas number one and earns Leaonard a fortune in royalties!!

The choice of this song may turn out to be the only good thing to come out of X Factor!!

  • It's about the things in life worth saying hallelujah to... the very human things. Some of the verses use biblical references - but they're not what the song is ABOUT.

'MAYBE there's a God above' but the human things (sex/love/family/life/death etc) that might bring us to sing hallelujah also bring pain - a broken hallelujah.

Apparently Cohen originally wrote something like 80 verses before settling on the ones he recorded in the original, so dropping one is no big deal.

  • No, it's not...

  • its about different bible recording like david and solomon

  • And anyway, it's to watch dolts like JLS have to pour all their fake emotion into words they'll never stand a hope of understanding or relating to.
