This short handmade film is a tribute to New Zealand Artist, Len Lye (1901-1980). Born in Christchurch, he was a film maker, sculpture, director, poet and one of the last all round polymaths -- a true creative force. His sculptures have great humour and a masterful understanding of materials. This film celebrates the Water Whirler, conceived before his death in 1980 and constructed in Wellington Harbour in 2006. Water Whirler stands 12 metres high is constructed of fibreglass on an motorised base that oscillates as is sprays water from a series of holes on the wand. It's about a ten minute routine of varying motion and it plays about once an hour.
