Is economic despair the vehicle for totalitarianism?

Plummeting unemployment rates mark this economic crisis around the nation which is resulting in a political crisis on Capitol Hill, as Democrats and the GOP debate the stimulus. Some analysts say that this economic despair is creating a vehicle towards totalitarianism, which was evident during the Great Depression. But during that depression, the nation had strong labor unions and a vibrant independent press. Without those traditional tools, what might we face in the coming years? Chris Hedges is the author of American Fascists: the Christian Right and the War on America, and a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist. He is pessimistic about he says is a growing movement towards fascism in the US.

One thing he said esp. needs to be underscored, that is: Yugoslavia's dismantling did not occur as a RESULT of ethnic strife, but rather planned economic meltdown caused social violence. Western elite financial interests working w/ US's CIA and East German's Stasi sabotaged Yugoslavia's thriving progressive democratic socialism causing great contraction & upsets that were leveraged to antagonize & provoke crisis.

What Hedges is saying is that Obama will be blamed of the accumulated evils of fascist America when in fact it is down to almost all in the ruling elite. But the demonization of Obama will be a boon to the ultra fascist right wing white dominionist Christians are just gagging for power, something that came breathtakingly close to happening under Bush.

Well Chris Hedges, you were right about one thing: Obama has proved worse than when you made this interview. But you were wrong about two things: first, that he was a man of good intentions and was intelligent: Nothing in his early political career suggested that he was. Second, that because he was a POC (Person of Color) he would be "demonized." The truth, as I believe you yourself (and Cornell West) have discovered, is that he merits demonization because of his rotten imperial presidency.
