I'm certain that you don't diss them, but Depeche Mode has their own completely unique image. And that image can be a called a bit underground by the mainstream persons because Depeche Mode ain't ripping no-one off., they have created a whole new style. And at least in the 80's they were called even more underground. They are a truely talented band and my favourite group. But I don't know if they aren't kept "underground" any more. I only mean that the a bit "underground" is only a benefit.
