Wow you had a great vantage point I was 3 miles away when I filmed this. in the special viewing area.

The crackling noise that the solid motors make is interesting: It's caused by small chunks of burning propellant being expelled from the nozzle at hypersonic speed. Each "pop" is a small sonic boom.

It took me quite a while to find a video of the launch with good sound quality. I've seen several Space Shuttle launches, so the sound didn't really come as a surprise, but I'm glad that when Ares starts launching we'll still have that spectacular crackle.

How right you are, Sir H. Over decades I traveled to central FL a dozen times -- and then moved to Brevard County when I retired -- just so I could experience these wonderful events that truly speak to the hope and genius of mankind. Everyone out there who hasn't seen a shuttle launch in person, you have less than a year left to do so. Add it to your "bucket list." And bring your kids so they can tell their kids...

and as loud as this rocket is which is using just one space shuttle solid rocket booster...but the space shuttle uses 2 of these suckers..so lets all imagine how incredible that must sound in person..and every chance i get i am there for every one of the shuttle launches and it is amazing!!

the sound of the solid rockets firing starts out with a low booming rumble, kind of like what huge roman candles sound like on the beach during the forth of july celebrations.then as the sound and shockwaves roll toward the north, west and south, which is where everyone is rather you work there or paid to come see it,the booming turns into huge extremely loud crackle and pops..you honestly have to be there in person to hear it to believe it.its amazing.3 to7 miles out some wear good ear protection

That is the sound you hear if you are this close but there is some static like sound during the ocsillating booming sound that I believe is just the microphone being overpowered with sound.
