In this video we give you a simplified answer to the question "What is a Variable Frequency Drive" In the video we use an ACTech SMVector series drive for an example.

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are electronic devices used to control the speed of an Alternating Current Motor (AC Motor). Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are also commonly known as adjustable frequency drives, adjustable speed drives, AC drives and inverters. Variable Frequency Drives have a wide range of application use and operate as load controls within these applications that may accomplish up to a 50% reduction in energy cost.

  • Why not run that motor with that VFD so we see the low and high speed difference.?

  • @dwetick with the increase in power and RPM the finish that can be achieved when machining is amaizeing and worth alot of dow... its called a faraday cage and an earth stack.

  • VFD's contribute a whole new set of problems when running a 50/60 Hz motor, specifically: RFI (radio frequency interference), shortened motor life due to overheating (motor fan not running up to speed), degradation of insulation due to harmonics and otherwise screwing up all local wireless communication devices.

    Think I'm kidding?... I'm not!

  • Nice video! love to learn, all there is to know about vfd,s i have a altivar vfd rated for a two hp motor, that i want to use as a exp platform. I run a batt to a inverter to obtain 120v. then to a transformer to get the 220 single ph. needed to run it. the object is to save weight in the project with less batteries, and heavy wires to the motor. Now i would like to know if the 3ph output of the single ph vfd could be coupled to the input of a larger 3ph input vfd? as the larger drives need 3ph.

  • Yes they could but the problem is you will need to power them up with batteries and then it becomes a weight issue.
