Iris grow from a rhizome, and mine stay green all year and don't go dormant. I don't cut my leaves either, and the general rule of thumb is divide every 3-5 years.

wrong, Irises need to be divided every 2-3 years and the foliage doesn't need to be cut down until it goes brown, about september time.
