  • @almondcore5 Very sad. He was always my Randy Kaye's favorite drummer. Paul was a motherfucker! a TRUE INNOVATOR.

  • New Jazz Conceptions - for my money, the greatest piano jazz trio recording ever. Paul Motian had that modern sound and tonal approach even then - and he swung like a motherf*cker! Bill was still quite boppy on New Conceptions, and you are able to hear the influence of both Tristano and Powell - but also a lot of Bill Evans, too. Great trio, and Teddy Kottick delivered as well, with strong, swinging lines.

  • His work with Bill Evans and Chuck Israels - some of the best jazz ever.

  • RIP Paul.

  • Ha, ha, ha! I knew this video...funny. He is talking about a drummer from the 30s/40s, coz in fact, he is coming from that period. His style came from that. Listen to his solo on "New Rag" from the Keith Jarrett trio album "Somewhere before" on Vortex 2012. And compare the style of Gus Johnson drum solo on "Raindeer" with the Lionel Hampton small band. Very similar, even the sound. and Gus Johnson is a drummer who used to play with Count Basie...

  • i dont know why this is so funny but im smiling. paul motian was truly one of my favorites and if it was not for his work with lafaro and evans id still be doing something completely boring

  • I shed a tear at hearing at Paul's passing. You will be missed, I was really hoping to see him perform in the next year or so if I could have made it to NYC. Seems I'll just have to imagine.

  • After I sadly found out Paul was gone, I remembered that freakin' funny video... His spirit surely lives on through his music.. Man.. The Bill Evans' Trio.. Amazing how they sounded together... Brilliant musician and man... Rest in Peace and Thank You!!!
