  • Beckman, Sperry, and others made these planar gas-discharge tubes that are sometimes called Panaplex displays. Pixie tubes are a different thing: a early-1950's predecessor to nixie tubes consisting of a flat display surface on the top of a tube through which cutouts of numbers are illuminated from below by ionized neon gas.
