It is illegal. They find many loopholes in the laws and endorse candidates and Senator's through other ways, like the internet, special diners (private parties) any way they can to influence and advance their agenda.

This kind of thing was supposed to have been "taken care of" after Watergate...I guess it doesn't matter that its already illegal for lobbyists to fund the national conventions...
