How do you work out that the pen is never drawing on the same line?it seems to nudge a few mm everytime it completes a trace.

I think that the distance between each line is determined similarly as everything else in the curve. To change this distance you would have to change the whole set of parameters. In the example filmed here it just so happens that this distance is a few milimeters.

There might be combinations of parameters, of course, which give the same distance between each line --at least in a certain phase of the movenment.
