I support Halifax Town and we did something similar. we had an annual friendly with Brighouse Town (a very small town next to Halifax, might as well be part of Halifax). By playing them every year, within a few seasons, it help Brighouse pay for floodlights, plus a little stand that holds about 100 people, so it was all good :)

We're now only 2 divisions above them after going bust and starting again (we're also i believe below Oxford City in terms of leagues now too!)
