You are awesome in explaining. I really needed this info. My battery is reading 12v just sitting there but as soon as i try to startthe bike, the voltmeter drops off the scale immediatly and there isnt enough juice to even turn the engine over. Now i just recently had the battery and charging system completly changed at a professional shop 2 mos ago. I did have the batt die on me when i left it on once for 5hrs) but since then..slow gone to crap. had it jumped by towtruk..could that kill it?

Did I find the right YouTube channel dedicated to motorcycle repair & maintenance? I found the information in this video precise & detailed but wonder if the application would still be the same for my 1985 Yamaha Maxim XJ700 that's having some issues with idling & MAYBE related to the electrical system. It wants to stall at idle even after warm up. When I use the brakes or turn signals the lights dim & I wonder if they're related or separate issues? Btw the carbs were just rebuilt 5 months ago.

Mr. Avery - why is it that if people don't understand things they are compelled to just make things up? The current does not "dump" into thre ground as you suggest when the battery is charged. As a long standing Automotive Engineer with a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering, I can unequivocally state that you are incorrect. I will let you research the correct answer and post as a responsible service to the community.

THANK YOU!!!!!! I searched all and this is the best. I have replaced 2 regulators and never knew about the ground wire. I am the "most people" you talked about. Thank you for saving me another regulator!

"dumps that current to ground"..? Not exactly. But I suppose for youtube purposes that's close enough.
