The Crooked Beat from The Clash´s masterful album Sandinista!

After Guns of Brixton this is just the second time bassist Paul Simonon sings lead vocals. As always, he does so amazingly.
This song really grows on you, especially its... well, crooked beat. It´s the kind of song you just can´t resist digging along to.
Also heard is the voice of famous reggae legend Mikey Dread, who worked with The Clash on money songs, especially on Sandinista! and also on great single Bankrobber.

I´m on a bit of a mission to make sure everything ever realesed The Clash gets on Youtube. And while I did find a version of this song it took me quite a while, since the song isn´t labeled The Crooked Beat, but something like Sandinista 3 11, I remember it wasn´t even the correct number.
Anyway, the pics aren´t anything special, just the usual Clash ones, with a Mikey Dread one thrown in to honor that great artist, who sadly died earlier this year from a brain tumour.
RIP Mikey, your contributions to reggae will always be remembered.

The Clash is according to me greatest arists of all history, and with some very important messages too.

Lyrics:

Start the car lets make a midnight run
Across the river to South London
To dance to the latest hi-fi sound
Of bass, guitar and drum
Seeking out a rhythm that can take the pressure off
Stepping in and out of that crooked crooked beat

Take a piece of cloth, a coin for thirst
For the sweat will start to run
With a cymbal splash, a word of truth
And a rocking bass and drum
Seeking out a rhythm that can take the pressure on
Stepping in and out of that crooked crooked beat

So one by one they come on down
From the tower blocks of my home town
Stepping with the rhythm of the rockers beat
Drowning out the pressure of the crooked beat
Seeking out a rhythm that can take the tension on
Stepping in and out of that crooked crooked beat

It has crooked past this crooked street
Where cars patrol this crooked beat
Badges flash and sirens wail
They'll be taking one and all to jail

Prance! Prance! You want a law to dance?

RIP Joe Strummer

  • Clash and drugs...

JS took speed but stopped (his words)

    TH - heroin (well documented)

    MJ/PS - no evidence...

But as for rap itself.... quote/unquote - White Lines (dare I say, proto-rap) was anti-drugs... unfortunately, the rest was not to be history...

  • Actually I think at the very least Mick's usage of both marijuana and LSD is "documented".

Not that I really care, seeing as I don't get the impression that drugs were a really big inspirational source for The Clash.

  • @habaneroo CORRECT :)

"We combined CBD & THC in culture dishes, aggressive Brain Cancer cells. Found a Synergistic improvement in the ability to THC not only to inhibit the growth but cause programmed cell death. We found specific Molecular Mechanisms that might explain why combining the 2 compounds makes a more efficient treatment. Data suggests compounds to be active you must use a high concentration (Rick Simpson's Cancer Cure ALL Hemp Oil) you WON'T be able by smoking it."
