Japanese electronics giant Sony has announced the launch of its new video game console, the Playstation 4.

At their media event on Thursday, however, Sony did not confirm a release date or price for the successor to the now seven-year-old PS3.

Among the touted advances were social integration and the ability to download games directly from Sony. Additionally, the new system will be able to download updates and patches to games during gameplay.

The company is also hoping the ability to transfer games to tablets, smartphones and its own Playstation Vita handheld system, will help counter flagging home console sales as games on the iOS and Android mobile operating systems continue to pick up steam.

Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports.
