  • How thick is the rock wall? What is used for the recirculating tray?

  • @happytexasgardner Rockwool comes in either 3" or 4" thickness. You can use any rectangular window box as a recirculating tray that does not have drainage holes. Readily available are polystyrene window boxes.

  • How many days will these plants be alive in these system? Do you prefer using rockwool or compost for middle layer?

  • @rumelian Providing that the plants are properly fed with liquid fertiliser they will live just as long as they would have done if planted in the traditional manner. Rockwool is the correct medium for hydroponic gardens. Soil and compost will deteriorate and eventually breakdown. Rockwool will keep its shape whereas compost will fall down to the bottom of the section in which it is contained.

  • How do you hold the rock wool covered with the shade to the wooden frame to the sides and bottom?

And how often do you need to add fertilizer to the water?

  • @diegoosorio Fasten the shade cloth to the timber frame with either a heavy duty staple gun or blue tacks. Add the fertiliser to the water that you use each time you top up the water supply.

  • Is it just me, or is the audio out of sync with the video? :P

  • We are building an external green wall (4m x 2m) on a sunny north facing wall (at Sydney).

Is it essential that you include a pump irrigation system or could you simply water the wall every few days? If that could work, would you need to use fertiliser at each water?

    Thanks!

  • hi Im Making a 12 square meter vertical garden in Uruguay. South America. we have a very similar climate. Im building an outdoor garden.

The question is: as the water has minerals that eat the metal, do you need a special type of pump? one with no metal I asume.

the other one, how many times a day do you have to set the timer to irrigate the panel? or is it on the whole day?

do you apply the rockwool dry and then insert the plants or you prehumidify it as to get the hidroponic water better?

  • This is a great concept but I have concerns about the rockwool used for ediable plants.

Because formaldhydes are used as a binder with most insulation products, here in Canada our known major manufactuer "Roxul", I believe still uses this toxic substance. I'll have to investigate further and/or find another alternative if that is still the case.

    Thanks for the post

  • @gardeningcentral -also known as mineral wool or rotten cotton

  • Also, how does the system remain stable? Because it is full of water and plants, is it top heavy? How easily does it tip over?

  • Because the wall is continuously wet, is there a mold problem. How do you prevent mold from growing?

  • the material needed for this doesn't sound very ecological, does it?

  • @gardeningcentral What type of Rockwool, specifically, did you purchase and where did you get it?

  • Hi

I'm extremely interested in building this around my home; however, I suck at flowers and know nothing about them. To get me started, could you tell me what some idea plants would work with such a system? For example, what plants are you using in your system? They look great!
