http://www.doghealthproblemsadvice.com - video segment on Dog Hot Spots by Sam Meisler DVM, a small animal veterinarian. Hot Spots in dogs can be caused initially by a variety of factors which include allergies, insect bites, splinters, or anything else that itches in one spot. Once the dog starts scratching at the area, a dog hot spot may develop.

  • Healing time can vary depending on treatment; if your dog continues to lick the hot spot during treatment, the time will be longer. Sometimes, an e-collar is helpful. Keep in mind using an e-collar without treatment can be very frustrating for your dog (sort of like having poison ivy and not being able to scratch)... :)

  • We've tried EVERYTHING, and have found that Gold Bond medicated powder (in the green or gold bottle) works the best! Sprinkle the wound generously with the powder. It dries it up quickly, takes the pain away almost immediately, and it heals quickly. And we have tried many medicines, etc. We don't cut the hair, just sprinkle lots of the powder. Don't touch the wound, as it is VERY PAINFUL!

  • how long will it be completely healed??

  • we thought our six year old beagle had hotspots so we went out and bought the shampoo but it turns out she had mange!

  • Thanks, this was helpful!
