i think gene raymond has better chemistry with esther ralston than joan crawford in this movie. their flirts seem spunkier and more fun than the solemn scenes with crawford, that feels like he should love her because she's beautiful, sincere and utterly devoted with all the attributes a guy shouldn't have turned down. with esther, it's like, gee this dame is filled with fun, what a swell time i would have with her, so let's kiss, sing and embrace.
I agree -- it's those little quivers and cracks that add texture to a voice and uniqueness to the song.
And while it's enjoyable to hear a technically perfect voice hitting every note exactly as it should be hit, I often find that this perfection comes at the cost of genuine feeling or emotion.
So that could be why many of my favorite singers are of the "imperfect but heart-felt" category than of the "is it live or is it Memorex" category.
You've got quite a collection of videos! Fun stuff.
I agree. Same goes for alot of other singers in their early days... such as Josephine Baker or even Rudy Vallee. A lot of folks dismiss their early works as amature & undeveloped. I like to hear the occasional off key quiver, crack in the voice....
I like that she hasn't got a perfect voice, too. A perfect voice would make this moment less charming and warm, and would only serve to distract us from what she's really good at here: her non-verbal communication. Nice chemistry.
Ms Ralston was really beautiful
