Considering that Shuttle used SRB's (which don't turn off), had no escape system, and required so much to go right on both launch and landing... its absolutely amazing we only lost 2 Shuttles.

I remember watching a night launch on television with an ex girlfriend who happened to have blonde hair, she wanted to know would the astronauts not want to be able to see where they were going, ...... we didn't last long after that.
