Ohio State beats Oregon 10-7 in the 1958 Rose Bowl to clinch the UPI national championship. Auburn, the no. 1 ranked team in the country at the time per the AP, was on probation for recruiting violations and was effectively barred from a national title. Ohio State won AP recognition almost by default.
Clips from this game are necessarily limited as reels 2 and 4 are lost to history. Therefore, you don't get to see any of the second quarter, almost all of the 3rd quarter and the early parts of the 4th quarter where Ohio State kicked what would eventually become the game winning field goal.
The footage comes from a 1959 re-airing of the game under the billing as the oldest surviving Rose Bowl telecast known to exist. I'm not sure of the veracity of that claim now, but there is some corroborating factors out there. The first local telecast occurred in 1948, the first national telecast occurred in 1952.
Mel Allen and Chick Hearn were on the call for this game.
Hard to believe Ohio State nor Oregon doesn't have a film of this game.

@otherkeithlaney - I probably knew it back in the 60s but I tend to forget things in my old age - Mel Allen was a great announcer for the Yanks back in the day. He remained VERY popular well into his latter years and will never be forgotten in the Big City.

@1400deadwood I'm not sure if you were aware of this, but Mel Allen did call out football games for the Alabama Crimson Tide back in the 1930s. When Allen was on vacation in New York, an executive at CBS gave him an audition for staff announcer. The rest, as they say, was history.

Mel Allen! Voice of the Yankees ~ so great to see him do football.
I like that term ''web foots''.
Isn't it great to see Dick LeBeau still going strong today after all these years?
Football is such a great game with all that terrific tradition!
