Twice a year, Berlin becomes the international stage for fashion and lifestyle. The Berlin Fashion Week invites fashion enthusiasts, buyers, experts and media representatives to get together at shows and award ceremonies, to enjoy all the latest trends at expert trade fairs and to visit exhibitions and off-site events.




Among the highlights of Berlin Fashion Week in January 2011 are the shows organized by the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin at Bebelplatz in the historical heart of Berlin.

This Video features two very creative Design Brands, in Guido Maria Kretschmer and Kaviar Gauche Berlin.

Hit designer Guido Maria Kretschmer opened his first store in Munich on 16 September 2009, stocking elegant essentials that belong in every woman's wardrobe.

Ever since the designer Guido Maria Kretschmer launched his high-fashion line three years ago, the world of fashion has been steadily enriched with its glamorous, feminine creations which hark back to the elegance of past times. It's now hard to imagine a red carpet without one of his pieces. Kretschmer exclusively works with high-quality materials which he transforms through immaculate cuts.

The opening of Kretschmer's store represented a milestone in his career and gives trendsetters a place to discover his fashion at first hand. As Kretschmer himself puts it: "The interior of my boutique is designed to revive the glamour of bygone days." Inside, his customers can find the latest womenswear designs, get expert, one-to-one advice, but most of all they can feel at ease. For his first store, Kretschmer sought out an exclusive spot in the heart of Munich which he describes as his "homage" to the city. Its location in a traditional and prestigious shopping area underpins the noble style of his creations.

KAVIAR GAUCHE

They create must-have bags and conceptual, feminine, avant-garde clothes. The Berlin-based label was launched with a guerrilla fashion show in front of the Paris department store Colette in 2003.

Since then, KAVIAR GAUCHE has held a successful presence on an international level. The modern interpretation of the evening dress brings KAVIAR GAUCHE increasingly onto the red carpet. Alongside top models such as Nadja Auermann, the musician Florence Welsh from Florence and the machine, as well as the German actress Heike Makatsch are one of KAVIAR GAUCHE's most regular customers since the label's very beginning. In addtition to that, Britain's newest super model, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is a new ambassador for the brand.

After the success of the red carpet looks and the following strong demand, KAVIAR GAUCHE launched their first Bridal Couture-Line in January 2009. The new bridal looks for 2011 have been shown during the Fashion Days in Zürich. KAVIAR GAUCHE is a professional cooperation partner of several prestigious companies. Beside collaborations with Swarovski or Dr. Hauschka, KAVIAR GAUCHE teamed up with the traditional shoe manufacturer Ludwig Görtz to create their already third shoe collection "Görtz designed by KAVIAR GAUCHE" for Autumn/Winter 2011.
Unlike the fashion week events of cities such as London or Paris, Berlin tends to rely on large trade fairs, such as the much-hyped Bread&Butter, for its bombastic glamour, rather than an endless succession of the kind of high-octane catwalk shows that you might find elsewhere.

While some designers stage shows at the historic spots such as Bebelplatz and near the Brandenburg Gate, many in Berlin do fashion week slightly differently. Throwing open the doors to ateliers with peeling walls and vintage chandeliers in dilapidated corners of districts like Wedding and Kreuzberg, lots of local designers simply allow prospective buyers to come and browse their frequently self-funded efforts.

"The big shows are very expensive, which means that many independent designers can't afford them," said couturier Andrea Schelling, adding she hoped media coverage will also extend to the more off-piste events such as her own.
