Big Brown working out with Michelle Nevin, Assistant Trainer and Exercise Rider.

I put this video together after watching other videos of Big Brown and wondered who the girl riding him was.

Nevin has worked with Trainer Rick Dutrow for "six or seven" years. Only racing insiders knew her name. Nevin is currently a minor celebrity because there are many photographs and videotapes of her riding and working out Big Brown.

MICHELLE'S BACKGROUND: Born and raised in Ireland, she moved to the United States at "around 17." She's the daughter of Michael Nevin, a former jockey who trained in New York, and granddaughter of horse trainer Richard Nevin.

RACING: Wanted to become a jockey but was too big; also worked horses for Irishman Leo O'Brien, her dad and Kiaran McLaughlin.

In quotes: "He doesn't do anything stupid. He's a good boy ... This is why people get up at 4 every morning, for the chance to find a horse like this. He's a powerhouse underneath you."

  • do you have to be really small to exercise them?

  • I think an excersice rider sould probably weigh say 165 lbs. or less. I think the Horse's in the Kentucky Derby carry 126 lbs. But if the Horse works out with a heavier rider it will build up more stanima and be faster with less weight in a race.

  • how much should an exercise rider weigh ?

  • at 0.15 what a shot

  • @Rememberthebest nope, as long as your not over weight, and no how to deal with rearing etc, my sister is quite tall, and she exercised them, i even went with her a few times and got to a 2 year old named vic :D

  • Not a problem, glad I could help :D

  • Thanks BigBrown2332 and all the rest. It's good to learn something new. :)

  • @ClaraPete123 O believe it is a ring bit. It helps keep the horse controlled a little bit more. Does not hurt the horse. Sometimes it is used if a horse gets to much on the bridle, It helps them sit back a little bit. Hope it helped.

  • ur right we use drop nose bands cause if they were to we would be screwd because we wouldnt be able to stop them

  • It is for his tongue :P

  • it is a tong tie
