Congressman Walter Jones (R-NC) speaks on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on the matter of 2 U.S. Border Patrol Agents, Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who have been imprisoned since January 17, 2007 and held in solitary confinement.
In the course of their duties securing the border, they sought to apprehend an illegal alien Mexican drug smuggler who was bringing in over $1 million of illegal drugs into the United States (and who had already attacked and cut Agent Compean). Agent Ramos fired a single shot at the smuggler in self defense, however the smuggler escaped back to Mexico and was driven off in a waiting car by his partners.
A rogue U.S. District Attorney, Johnny Sutton, prosecuted these agents for assault with a deadly weapon and for violation of the drug smuggler's civil rights! Given that it appears evidence vital to the defense was illegally withheld from the Court, these agents were sentenced to 11 and 12 years in federal prison. The U.S. government later admitted today in federal court that the prosecution's star witness (i.e., the drug smuggler) lied under oath. Sutton now faces a new ethics complaint for "willfully misleading" the Court in this case.
Many U.S. Congressional Representatives have signed letters to President Bush asking for a full pardon of these agents, and sponsored resolutions in Congress seeking such pardons. These Border Patrol Agents are currently still in prison, and their cases are on appeal before the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

I think the drug war is a hoax and a waste of time. But these Agents should never have been charged. I think bush only commuted the sentences, he didn't pardon them.

Well, I heard last night. That Bush finally had the balls or was pressured into a pardon for the agents.
They never should have been sentenced, Bush should have pardoned them a long time ago, and he should not have done it on his final day. What a coward Bush has become?

My comments are completely ignorant. LoL. Let me get this straight, so it somehow makes more since that the U.S. Attorney is corrupt, and Bush is behind it all in order to sabatoge border enforcement while trying to appear like he´s doing something? LMFAO. Where did you get this side of the story from? Fox news??? I love it- truly worthy of Hollywood.

and your full of crap if you think they broke the law. they were doing their job. they cant help it if they had a corrupt US attorney charge them for doing their job. they cant help it if the US attorney and his office withheld facts in the trial, and by the way loser, the punishment set forth by the border patrol disipline guide calls for anything from a oral reprimand to FIVE day suspension. no where in does it say anything about trials and jail time.
research the facts and come back

On a serious note, the DA is my personal hero for doing the right thing- prosecuting these border agents for the criminals they are- despite the obvious consequences for doing so. That is a prosecutor's job.

You know nothing about the particulars of this case. The suppression of evidence by the DA, the misapplication of mandatory sentencing laws against the agents,
the dozens of Congresspersons so upset at the handling of this case that they wrote a letter seeking the pardon of these Border Patrol Agents, and the Bush Admin's ongoing campaign to try to disenfranchise the Border Patrol so they won't be as effective at stopping illegal border crossers. Read up on it before revealing your ignorance

They broke the law! I don't care who they are.

Sorry, but to be direct, your remarks are completely ignorant. BP Agents Ramos and Compean acted in self-defense after seeing what the preceived as a weapon being drawn at them as the illegal drug smuggler was running back over the Mexican side of the border. The only thing these agents did wrong was to fail to report the shooting - an administrative error, NOT a violation of any law. But DA Sutton, who is in Bush's pocket, decided to misapply the law & throw charges against them (CONTINUED)

with mandatory sentencing. Also, significant evidence that would have helped these agents was suppressed, leading many members of Congress to call for the DA's resignation. This was part of Bush's plan to effectively sabatoge border enforcement while trying to appear like he's doing something (e.g., Nat'l Guard deployed at border, but quietly removed several years later when no one was watching). Do more research - Ramos and Compean are pawns used in a larger battle to keep US borders open.
