When Barbra Mateland died, she and her husband came back as ghosts. When the Deetzes' move into their home, Barbra takes a shine to Lydia.
Barbra watches over Lydia and realises that Lydia misses the city and that she wants to go back home.
Things get worse when Lydia meets a mysterious man (Beetlejuice), who claims he can "Make her happy and change her life".
Lydia and Beetlejuice start up a romance and over time Lydia falls madly in love with love with him.
However, when Charles and Delia, Lydia's dad and step-mum, find out about her and Beetlejuice, they forbid Lydia to ever see him again because they think he's "Bad news". But Lydia runs off to Beetlejuice and they plan to run away and get married.
She confides in her only friend, Barbra. Barbra tells Lydia to stay away from Beetlejuice, Barbra also thinks he's "Bad news", But Lydia doesn't listen.
She and Beetlejuice run off but, after a couple of months Lydia finds out that Beetlejuice is cheating on her. Lydia is so upset that she runs home. When she reaches the house Delia and Charles welcome her back.
Lydia thinks she has moved on...but Beetlejuice comes back and makes amends with Lydia and they get married again.
