I don't think she fell in with greed per se, i think it has a lot more to do with the title in that, like the stone the value of the child never changes, like the stone it is hard and absolute, but because the stone turns our perception of this value changes and our actions can be guided by such poor perception, even though the stone/baby never lost their absolute value.

this could be about the destruction of society because the baby represents innocence and the jewels represent greed. the mothers choice of greed over innocence represents the world growing over time and becoming more and more circulated about money

this is so sad but true in a lot of ways.people go looking for treasures they already had then they lose them over trash.
