TWO resilient chimneys at Barnsley College were quickly razed yesterday. Demolition experts had spent more than three weeks attacking the chimneys with handheld power tools working high up on a cherry picker platform. They were seen cutting it into chunks before dropping them down the chimney and were even seen hitting it with hammers. Yesterday a demolition machine was able to reach the chimneys for the first time and got rid of them in about four hours. The machine was able to drive up onto the pile of rubble left by the demolition of the main building. Project manager Adrian Kelly said: "It's gone very well."The college is now almost completely flattened. But the future of the site hangs in the balance - it was announced last week funding for the new £60m building is in doubt.
