  • you did great.. what a tresure you have, youreself.. i found a box and i think i may do the same thing!

  • Oshnapian, undoubtedly your are correct when you say that he just wants to make it pretty for his daughter. The problem is that, rather than teach his daughter about the beauty of antiques, he is creating a 2nd generation whose idea of pretty is the inbreeding of Walmart and Ikea. Children can be taught to appreciate greatness;my aunt walked us through art museums & taught us to recognize Monet and the elements of his style. I took a 7 year old to an antique show.and made it fun for her.

  • @Polistotle I don't think he is restoring it or worried about reserving its 'antiqueness'. You can tell from the way he is talking about its age. He just wants to make it pretty for his daughter. As an antique lover myself though, I understand what you mean.

  • This is exactly how NOT to restore an old trunk. Should not remove old fabric; instead clean it. Do not sand old wood; this destroys the patina. Do not paint old wood; stain it. If you do choose to paint it, accentuate the age by using milk paint or some imitation thereof. Do not paint old hardware; clean and polish it lightly. If you do paint old hardware, do not use gloss paint inconsistent with aged furniture. Bugs Bunny said it best: "What a maroon!"
