@Envelope86 Let's get real...won the 5th cup with Gord Lane, he was already washed up by 1984. You really think veteran Gordie Lane was going to stop Messier from winning the Conn Smythe trophy that year. I was cheering for the Isles to tie the Habs record of 5 consecutive cups, but the Oilers, in particular Messier was very hungry. Many people forget that the Oilers also added Ken Linseman who saved their bacon in a 7 game Smythe final vs Calgary.
Getting Gord Lane from the Caps was a major acquisition for the Isles at the time. He played a big role and was a huge asset to them, and not only in the toughness dept. Excellent guy to have on your team.
Gord Lane was just what the Islanders needed at that point in time: a smidge more toughness. His role has been underrated, and they just might have won that 5th Cup had he been healthy. We'll never know!
