Hi, so do you have to use an over sized piston after doing this because you keep saying it's "Cutting"... I have a ridge but I was just gonna hone it, on an ATV... So, if I do this will I need a over sized piston?
-
any true automotive machinist and engine builder knows that you do not use a ridge reamer on a cylinder wall
-
@bmays002 yep, thats what I meant when I said block hone. Bottle brush hone is better tho. Most part stores dont carry them but a performance shop should have one. Reduces the chances of excessively tapering the cylinder. What carabela125 said also makes plenty of sense as why this tool exist. :]

Once the ridge is gone you can use one of those 3 stone hones in a drill to break the glaze, then some new rings.

@CrikeyMang Not tryin to hate even tho its looks like I am. I just strongly believe in doing it right the 1st time..not the 2nd. But I understand everybody works on a budget and you have to do with whats available to you in certain times. I still liked the video tho. Ive actually never seen a diy tool like that. Ideas good but only a temporary fix at best. Cheers :D

Is that all you did or did you also hone the cylinders? I guess I see this tool as being pointless as diy unless like you stated that yes a boring bar uses something very similar but travels the entire length of the cylinder. Than its honed to the exact size. A block hone would have taken care of the ridge. Any noticeable ridge should be machined which is usually on the thrust side. Any material taken off above the ridge is pointless since the rings never travel that high hence the ridge

@silicon212~ i was talking about oil filter... not air filter.
By the way iv been to Arizona, beautiful landscape, i love it!.... but i dont think id like to live there.
-
@marek0086 unless you live in Arizona with its dust storms, like me. :)
-
@silicon212~ Its more oil than filter.

@marek0086 I've got a 350 with 360k miles on it. At 330k, I replaced the heads on it and it only had carbon buildup. I don't think it's the way it's driven though - I drive it hard and put it away wet, and have since mile 0 (I built this motor back in '93). No ridge, in fact, you could still see crosshatch from the honing operation from its build in '93. Keep the oil changed, and use good air filters.
Thanx Harry Porter for showing me how
