AUSTRALIAN POPULATION FASTEST GROWING FOR 40 YEARS

With an increase of 2.1 percent in the year to March, Australian population is growing faster than at any other time during the last 40 years. The rapid rise is mainly due to Australia's current migrant intake, with the population set to rise from 22 million to 35 million within the next 40 years. In the wake of the global recession the federal government has moved to marginally reduce immigration, which currently remains one of the highest levels in the world.

'In order for Australia to prosper'... We are already prosperous, among the most so in the world. Our living standards are going down. HDI goes up with wealth, but new studies that include life satisfaction are showing Australians are getting lost in the fast paced 'money is happiness' ideology. Population goes up, long term wealth goes down, environment goes down, happiness goes down, quality of life goes down, crowding/congestion goes up. There is hardly a good side to increased population.

The sad thing is, we're ignoring the clear overseas examples of exactly what you describe. You only have to look at the UK and Eu. Britain for example, has a massive population, 2.5 million unemployed, a declining environment and standard of living, yet immigration continues at almost 250,000 pa. Even though the pointers are there, many still believe in Rudd's "Big Australia." Why???

Stop immigration, we wouldn't need it if we have more kids. Immigration will leave Australia worse than the countries of those who immigrate.

@AustraliaProud Big people and big companies with big power. That's why. It's a bureaucracy. The power should be with the people. America is a perfect example of what we're headed for. Scandinavia is a perfect example of what we should be aspiring to.

@pieterdale Could you give an example? I could not find one example although I have seen enormous numbers of ethnic violence almost everywhere. Yugoslavia (Bosnia), Middle East (Israel), Asia (Cambodia / Korea) , India, Kashmir, Nigeria have endless death due to ethnic and religious violence.

So, population growth in australia is a problem. But what do they propose to do about it? Stricter immigration laws? Incentives against families which have too many kids?
