Here is a "Chrominance wipe Transition" video version of one of my large collection of fading then and now photographs of Derby and Derbyshire.
The view will fade back and forth several times, revealing past and present views as it goes.

Here we can see a view of the former Main Centre in Derby. The first photo is around 1963 and the second is 21st May 2003.
Of course since then this entire area has vanished to make way for the new £340M Eagle shopping centre extension by Westfield.

Perhaps you remember it like it was yesterday.
Do you remember First Byte Computers in the left corner?
Wilkos of course that had been there for many years with Argos beyond that.
That odd building on the right side that had a mosaic tiles in the shape of some eggs?

I always remember that, and now its all gone for ever.
The Main Centre may have been crap but its part of your memories, shed a tear for times gone by. . .

To view lots of fullscreen versions of then and now photos of the local area see my vast then and now section here :

If you have any nice memories of this area post them. What was that record shop on the right that used to sell tickets for music gigs?

  • I remember seeing ghostbusters & starwars at the odeon back in the day

  • @socomwet Them were the days, thick smoke and the icecream lady before the main feature.

  • Comfy chairs but squeaky, Massive queues up towards C&A. Sticky floor in the cinema. all good though!

  • @socomwet Great memories but it has to change for the better :(

  • Talk about going back in time! I'm trying to work out where these were taken from. Would the cinema be behind you and the Spot to the left? If I'm right, Clouds disco would be behind you to the right?

  • Yes you have it, the former Gaumont Palace cinema/Odeon cinema/Canon Cinema is directly behind me. Now Zanzibar nightclub.

The Spot is about 40 yards to the left.

I have never heard of Clouds disco, what year are we talking?

  • The main centre was northing like the bus station. Westfield is just a load of rip off shops that never close and think everybody got nothing do in there life but shop

  • So true! There's no character in Westfield - you could be in Durham or Derby and you wouldn't know; because they're all the same places. No character, no individuality, no uniqueness - that's why I hate them and continue to support local shops that have been in Derby for literally hundreds of years.

  • @abhudson14 They should have made the Main Centre an undercover complex and developed Duckworth sq similarly pedestrians would still be frequenting both ends of town
