Icelandic TV station video (language is Icelandic) during Airbus A380 crosswind landing certification tests in Keflavik with 40 to 50 knot crosswinds. Technique is to fly crabbed down to flare height then "kick" (gently) the rudder to align the nose. Some crab at touchdown is acceptable and will be cancelled as the main gear also align the bird with the runway. Sounds easy dosn't it? Notice the flight control laws only allow the lower rudder until the aircraft is on the ground, then both upper and lower rudders are controlled by the autopilot during AutoLand operations or by the rudder pedals. This logic helps prevent unwanted roll from the upper rudder due to its placement being so far away from the longitudinal axis of the aircraft.

  • Anyone else here amazed at how humans can get that thing to fly??

  • @link2400 The fact that they DO bend and flex so much is precisely the reason that they DON'T snap off. If they were rigid... that's exactly what they WOULD do.

The 747 wasn't a big step at all in 1968. Not the technology. It was a calculated, but bold risk. Huge airliners had been attempted before, and some thought Boeing were foolish to build such a huge plane in the 1960's. This was at a time when air travel still was for a selected few, and relatively few people ever visited other countries (and if they did not so by plane).

For the uncertain and risky market of the early 2000's the A380 was a far bolder gamble. Paid off...

In 2150 people will say just the same about us.

People back in the late 1800's thought technology couldn't improve much more to what they had. This shallow view has been held throughout the cause of the history.

2012 technology will look as simple and primitive to the public in 2112 as 1912 technology looks to us. Or 1812 technology looked to the people of 1912 (a huge difference).

  • Just 150 years ago we used horse and cart, or the occasional steam train...now look, amazing.

  • Sieht aus wie Moby Dick! Aber super Pilots!

  • Damn how it drifts! :D

  • take off was more special

  • @fdeflam Its not really a big step. The 747 was a big step in 1968. Its just another big airplane that was financed by Euro governments. I work on airliners and frankly A 300 were corroding garbage. But they were older ones maybe they got better? Or maybe the sideways nose gear a320's are the same as a 737? I'm glad you love aviation but I love Boeing and i have to say some of my pals at LH love airbus. I should see my first 787 in a few months.

  • Молодец ! Мастерство заметно сразу! И вообще всех пилотов (российских) надо заставить летать на планерах и потом обязательно пилотах и не ниже мастера спорта!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OMG!! Credit 2 them pilots that waz sum landing...
