Even when I was young and got fed shit. (I'm 54 that's a lot of shit.) I never felt comfy with the stuff I was fed.

Looks to me the German pilots were dedicated just as much as we were. ~ No more fanatical than we (allied) were, just brilliant pilots, mechanics and fighting for thier homes.. No space to do this

@thehappyinsomniac ..,delayed developement did not play any part in the lack of strategic metals that Germany lacked. The Me 262 004 Jumo jet engine put into production lacked these and even under the most ideal maintainance conditions only had a operational life span of 7-10 hrs.

To deploy the Me 262 in large numbers required metals and alloys that Germany did not, and would not have.

The Allied forces were coming after the Germans and coming hard. Many an ME-262 was shot down by North American P-51 and Republic P-47 Thunderbolts while they were attacking Boeing B-17 bombers and taking off and landing. The British were right around the corner with their Gloster Meteor. The Russians and the Allied's proximity caused Hitler to commit suicide. Long live the United States of America.

@informant007 Agreed. Check out Adolf Galland's book and his comments re the delayed development of the 262. Had that program been allowed to follow it's natural course i think the European countryside would have been littered with the debris of allied bombers. Imagine a fighter with all nose mounted cannons, a massive speed advantage and no damned radiators to take stray rounds being deployed in large numbers against the allied formations. It would have been mayhem and slaughter in the bombers

Responding to 'Fluffy1931' I agree that the Junkers Jumo oo4 which replaced the earlier BMW jets , were far from reliable. I was talking about the advanced technology that lived on after the war. Germany during the manufacturing processs couldn'tt get the needed Chromium and other vital materials it needed due to the alies blockades. Huges replaced the needed materials after the war on his own private Me 262. It is remarkable that under day & night bombing that Germany could do anything !
