Wow, she's a researcher and didn't back up the data. Come on. If it wasn't stolen, what about hard drive failures (assuming she had a hard drive and not an SSD)? Every researcher with information they would be begging for should have it backed up on multiple external devices or backed up in the cloud. Time Machine makes it so easy too.
