Elliot Smith has inspired Me a lot through My High School days, I wish I could shake his hand but in time I will.

@DudemanofAwesome The Queens of the Stone Age version is the best imo. What is OSI though I'd like to check out another? I also suggest the QotSA one if you've never listened to it.

It's scary how well this guy could capture the flavor of particular depressed state in one song. I recall a Leonard Cohen line "Even damnation is poisoned with rainbows" - hah - seems Elliott knew about that - his music seemed to be mostly about finding the beauty in life, no matter where you are in it. I think that's pretty cool if you're a person who is haunted by darkness a lot. It lets you know that you are not alone in the dark, and what a precious gift that is.

Now I know a big inspiration for Coma Cinema.
Besides, the music is gorgeous. If you must, you can tune out the lyrics and enjoy the music alone.
Then again, try giving Independence Day a shot. It's not smiley-face happy (thank God), but it definitely shows an appreciation for life.
Elliott was a major artist. He understood blackness, but he got a lot of mileage out of the grey areas as well. And as a painting classmate of mine once said, "There are some beautiful greys."

Elliott's music is dark, but it isn't monochromatic. In the case of this song, the message is more important than any discomfort it causes. There is hope and humor in his songs if you're willing to listen. Many people could be letting their knowledge of his death color their reactions to his work. A lot of people have heard his music before learning he was dead, and that may be the best introduction to him. They had the opportunity to appreciate the music on its own terms.
